September Bloom Day

Welcome friends!
If you're new here, I garden in Eastern Washington, zone 5.

This month has been mostly hot and dry, with a week of cooler rainy temperatures thrown in just to keep things interesting.
Right now as I type there's a loud thunderstorm going on outside with lots of pouring rain.
Yes! That means I'm off the hook for watering tomorrow!

Most of my blooms are coming to the end, except for this one corner of my front flowerbeds. I'm not sure how it's different than the rest, but the plants in this corner are really thriving, even with all the heat we've had. Perhaps they get a touch more shade?

Guillardia, Stella d'Oro daylily, 'Burgundy Iceberg' rose.

Guillardia 'Burgundy'

I have to laugh at this guillardia.
So this is the guillardia version of "burgundy," huh?

It's ironic, because I was debating earlier this summer if I should add that deep red-orange tone to the flowerbed when I had one (just one!) transplanted Asiatic lily bloom in the same shade.

It's doesn't clash like I thought it would with the true purples, deep pinks, and other shades going on, so it's going to stay. I guess it was meant to be!

For the record:
In back, my 'Yellow Topaz' rose has produced another flush of flowers.
The portulaca continues to bloom with little to no water, right along the house.
The sedum are close to blooming, but the blossoms haven't opened up yet.
I've pulled out most of the petunias from my flowerpots, as they were looking rangy.

Check out the other blossoms at May Dreams Gardens.
Happy Bloom Day!

  1. I love the colors of the petunias in your header. I have given up on them because of the budworms. Your other flowers are looking very pretty too. I wish we could have some of your rain!

    1. Hi Dorothy!
Thanks for the visit. Petunias are one of my "old reliables" every summer--I'm glad I haven't had trouble with budworms. It's nice to have something that keeps blooming under a variety of conditions.

    1. Thanks, Karen! The iceberg rose is one of my current favorites, too.

  3. There is no truth in advertising when it comes to flower names. Either the people who name them are color blind, or the colors are different depending on where in the country you are gardening. Or maybe both. But no, that gallardia does not look burgundy!

    1. I agree! In fact the one next to it is supposed to be the same variety, but it is deep orange with yellow tips on each petal. I will probably move it this fall, assuming I don't run out of energy before winter hits!

  4. Your gaillardia looks beautiful. I love colors like that. And your burgundy iceberg rose is beautiful! I have one, but it's lost under some weeds! :O It's on my to-do list to uncover it! Enjoy your rain!

    1. Thanks for the visit! My fall to-do list just keeps getting longer and longer, while the days get shorter and shorter. And that's with my bulb order not here yet. I had better get busy these next few weeks!
